I know this is an old topic but my husband and I were looking all over the internet for an answer and weren't satisfied with the No this post gave us ;)

We kept searching and we found this site to be helpful:

in Florida - YOU ARE allowed an extension to your temporary drivers license. When your i94 expires, your license will expire. Go into the DMV/tax collector's office with a print out of this pdf. On page 17 it states that you are allowed a temporary license if you entered on K1 or you have valid I130 paperwork, etc. My husband went in yesterday and it worked out in the end but you will have to argue for your case a little as the normal desk workers don't necessarily know this rule. Be patient and as kind as you can and it should be ok.

He paid for the renewal, got a temporary paper good for 60 days and they said they are mailing his real one to the house before the 60-day paper expires. Thank goodness !

Hope this helps.

ps. he had tons of extra documentation which helped: NOA2 (acceptance for K1), NOA for AOS, I94 (Even if it was expired) and 3 proofs of address (Bank, Power company, USCIS letter). He also had his passport showing K1 visa, SS-card and his French Birth Certificate, just in case.

You can actually get your SSN before you get your EAD. They send you a card in the mail that says the SSN is only valid with DHS authorization. Once you get the EAD or green card you need to go back to the social security office to get a new card without the only valid with DHS authorization. It isn't that hard.
