Requirements for a joint sponsor

We were asked at my wife's interview to obtain a joint sponsor and submit the papers.

I have a friend who is married and has two children.

My own last tax return reflects agi of 15000.

My friend's past three years tax returns reflect agi of about 70,000 each year. He files jointly with his wife and the income is from self employed sources. He owns a few businesses.

Who would be our joint sponsor? My friend alone, or his wife also, as they file a joint 1040.

Will I need to submit his green card alone or also his wife's green card? What about the children?

I know 70,000 in income is enough in this case, I am just curious as to how much minimum income would be sufficient in a scenario like this? Where the joint sponsor has a wife and 2 children. So a household size of 4 people. Not counting my wife, the beneficiary.

- Your friend alone would be the joint sponsor. Since he filed joint tax returns with his wife, you can provide an I-864A for household members (the wife).

- You would need to provide a front/back copy of his green card and if you submit the I864A then his wife's as well. It is not needed for the childen.

- For a household size of 4, the min required is $30,312.

Question #19 is for sponsored immigrants -- anyone other family members that will be immigrating with your wife

So, our joint sponsor is self employed. He owns businesses that produce the income and his wife is just a housewife. In this case, do we need a i-864A and copy of her green card or no?

It depends on the consulate. I've seen one where even though the wife was a housewife, they still needed an I-864A because the taxes were filed jointly.

It would probably be best to submit it just in case.
