Nothing really astounding here. We have had unsettled accounts with Tehran since the Carter administration. When people would ask me the question why we were in Iraq my reply has always been the question is not Iraq but rather when we will be in Iran. Iraq will make a very good staging ground for our move into Iran I have also been saying this for a long time. Without Iraq we would not have a good fairly secure staging ground for the invasion of Iran. We have known and they have made no secret about wanting to be part of the nuclear club for years. Guess what ain't gonna happen.

Not a very good staging ground considering the forces on the ground don't really have control over it.

Are you kidding me, you should beleive that we have the resources, there is not a third rate Army out there that we can't conquer with a few Divisions...Seriously though, Iraq and Iran fought for many years with no real winner, did you see how we bowled the Iraqi Army twice...now you have to understand that this insurgency, well we can conquer an Army, but when dealing with the people, that is harder as we were never designed to do what is being asked now.

I'm not sure how useful it is to speculate about things like that. Iran and indeed Syria do not have 3rd rate armies - in ordinary circumstances the US would likely overpower them, but at a much higher cost than I think the public are prepared to pay. We're not dealing with "ordinary circumstances" however, and most people are tired of war and "false promises". Not to mention the fantastic cost of opening up another major offensive. We'd be paying that off for centuries.

I agree...but it is not up to the people...Bush still has sometime left in office...beleive me, I am tired of it two, however to say that our military could acheive victory over Iran or Syria...well, I am rather sure that we could achieve victory over both countries rather easily, it is just the policing action afterwards that will get you...

I don't think Bush et al have any political capital left to get the US into yet another war - when the highly controversial one he got us into in Iraq is still far from finished, and has been unmitigated disaster. In the small amount of time he has left the guy is more or less irrelevant especially considering the new makeup of the senate and congress. No politician who values their career is going to support another war, and I can't see any presidential candidate standing solely on national security and foreign policy issues. The 9/11 card is a little tired these days - I think we're beyond the point where the government can rely on the emotional reaction to a 6 year old tragedy for support of its policies.

When is American Terrorism going to end?

Fishdude is right. America may go in and attack undefended countries like Iraq, but Iran is a totally different matter. The writing is on the wall, and it will spell the end of the United States. Bullies eventually get it coming to them in the end, and at some point other countries will decide to stand up against American terrorism.

Not when the "bully's" military budget exceeds the total spent by the next 25 largest military spending nations in the world

Was good enough for the UK (for centuries) and it's still around eh?

Especially when the bully's creditors are the Chinese.

American Aggression is going to end in my lifetime.

We are pretty good at fighting a conventional war. When it comes to fighting people that cheer for you in the day time then come out at night to set up road side bombs, we don't have the capability. Sure we could knock out Iran's military infrastructure but I don't think there would be any boots on the ground in Iran except for covert operations. Iraq is not a perfect staging ground for any attack on Iran IMO. An attack on Iran would probably cause a massive retaliation from Iranian forces and Iraqi Shiites on those troops staged in Iraq.

I don't think there is a way to win in these countries. Look at the Soviet Union. They had one of the best militaries in the world but got taken apart when they tried to occupy Afghanistan. You can not win these types of "wars" with tanks and jets. Granted, the mujahadeen did get help from the US, but I think the Soviet Union would have never been able to effectively control that country.

In any event, I hope this gets worked out diplomatically. The way Iran funds terrorism, starting something on Iranian soil would cause us problems all over the world.

Ignorant.

Consider how much Amerikkka funds terrorism.

My post was in regards to an attack on Iran and what would happen if we did. Iran does fund terrorism or didn't you know that? Perhaps if you read my post a little slower, you would see I never once said I supported this.

It's funny how countries who have in the past killed millions in the name of imperialism are now so quick to shake their finger.
