Our status is "ready" but we haven't received packet 3 yet. I found the packet 3 pdf for Montreal and we submitted the DS-160. Is it OK to just email the 3 requested documents now, or do we have to wait to hear from them first?

How long has it been? I waited two weeks and then emailed the Montreal consulate asking them to send correspondents through email moving forward. They didn't respond for 7 business days. I called the NVC and they told me that had sent something out a few days ago. When I sent Montreal my email I had done the ds160 and included the bar code number. They emailed me back with Packet 4 and asking for a scanned copy of my birth certificate. So I did that a few weeks ago and I have been able to go my medical and my interview is less then two weeks away.

Montreal consulate is really slow- they don't take calls about K1s and they take quite some time to respond to their emails. I got my packet 3 last week in the mail, as did my fiancé. You might be best to email, just my two cents :) I was really anxious to get the ball rolling!

(Edited to add: from packet 3, all they requested was the ds160 number and a scanned copy of my birth certificate)

It's been 17 days and still no packet 3 but I have everything together to email. Checklist, scanned passport biographic page, DS160 confirmation page in PDFs.

Now this is probably a really stupid question.... but can I email it from my email address (I'm the petitioner) or does my fiance have to email it from his or doesn't it matter?
