Tell me about your Prom

My hubby and I never had a reception, we eloped. We want to have a big party for friends (even though it is 1 yr since we got married) and we don't have the money to do the chicken-dinner-booze=$10K party. So, we've set the date, it is in June. We're going to have a 70's Prom.

So tell me about your prom!! I don't remember much,

I went to one in the early 80's but man, I don't remember anything about it...

so far we have:

disco ball

spiked punch

polyester

bad 70's music

Cafeteria trays with cookies & cupcakes

chapparones (spelling?) I have 2 friends who are teachers who are going to do this.

cotton candy machine

some kind of snack food - like maybe a hotdog machine? I don't remember having food at prom

king & queen (plus a court; we'll be choosing the "best costume" people as the court)

I want some more crazy ideas. . . maybe a hustle contest? :dancing:

Some ideas from the web...

The Swingin' 70's

Everything psychedelic goes, including the obligatory disco ball and some lava lamps! For flowers, think carnations in vases on macramé doyleys as centrepieces! Sprinkle multicolored confetti and glitter on the tables, and hang posters of 70's music and movie stars and plenty of balloons and streamers around the room. Try tie-dying cheesecloth for drapes or tablecloths. A Saturday Night Fever dance-off would be huge! The 70's allows so many cool ideas that it's a prom decoration bonanza.

Grease

The best low budget idea for prom decorations yet! Somewhere in the back of the gym or auditorium there must be some props that were used a generation or two ago, just begging to see the light of day again! Music's easy and favors are cheap … try packs of bubble gum or bottles of bubbles with wands for blowing through. Stage a romantic "Summer Lovin'" contest for budding Sandy's and Danny's to show their stuff. As prizes, provide gifts of Grease soundtracks or DVD's.

Sounds like fun to me

OMG I love this idea! Of course I was a teenager in the late 70's so all this is familiar to me. Just as a curiosity question, what do you consider bad 70's music?

Google "proms from 70's" and see if it gets you anything :)

When I say Bad I mean Baaaaaaaaaad Aaaaaaaaaass HA HA. I am going to use my MP3 player and load it up with Soul, Disco, the folksy story songs like Cats in the Cradle and Gypsys Tramps and Thieves, etc. etc.

Bad = baaaaaaad aaaaaaaaaass

I found a webpage that sells Blacklight posters! Ruling!

I am having so much damn fun brainstorming this. I love the carnation flower idea for centerpiece too.
