Hi

Well i got my EAD card on wednesday and i went into the Social Security office yesterday to apply for a new card, for a change of name and to show i am eligible to work.

I got SSN back in 1999 when i first came to the USA and worked on a J-1 visa. I kept this document in case i planned to work in the USA in the future.

I basically showed them my passport, EAD card, Marriage Certificate and application for a new card. USCIS has not updated my details in their system yet so i may have to wait a little while. They photocopied my documents and are going to check if they match with USCIS records etc. They said normally it takes 10 days but it may take longer depending on USCIS. The office was really nice and i asked if i can still look for work even though i dont have my new card yet. I was informed yes, but that my application can be denied because my details are not correct. Hmmmm so basically i guess what he was saying is that its best to wait for my new card? I just hope its not another long wait, since ive been waiting since August just to be able to work.

You use the old SSN card, the number is assigned to a person for life. All you need to do is update your immigration status with SSA.
