NEW YORK (AP) -- Police stopped more than 500,000 people on city streets last year -- more than five times as many as they did just four years before, a newspaper reported.

New statistics also show a near doubling in the average number of arrests resulting from such stops, The New York Times reported Saturday.

[...]

The new statistics show that 55 percent of the people stopped last year were black, and more than 30 percent were Hispanic.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told City Council members Jan. 24 that racial profiling was not at work in street stops.

[...]

Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said more than 68 percent of crimes involved suspects described as black by victims or witnesses. He said more than 24 percent of suspected offenders were described as Hispanic.

[...]

An average of 5,317 arrests resulted from street stops each quarter last year, up from 2,819 in 2002. Summonses related to the stops nearly quintupled to an average of 7,292 a quarter last year, compared to 1,461 in 2002.

I'm a road warrior for many years due to my work taking me out of town on the road at all hours of the day and night. I have been pulled over by the cops without getting arrested or a ticket. I straighten it out and am allowed to go upon my way. And I'm a white guy.

So what are we to conclude from this data in the article?

Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said more than 68 percent of crimes involved suspects described as black by victims or witnesses. He said more than 24 percent of suspected offenders were described as Hispanic.

If you can't do the time...don't do the crime. It is kind of retarded to suggest that we put a racial cap (quota) on arresting criminals or investigating criminal activity.

I believe it. Just another reason to be suspicious of the police.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

In Michael Moore's Columbine movie, there's a montage of anchor men/women saying 'suspect was a black man' over and over again as if to imply that the media/police is racist.

Erm, IF the suspect was a black man, then what's the issue?

The issue is you watched a Michael Moore movie. Shame on you. Hope you didn't pay for it :P

The issue is whether the NYC police are more apt to stop you if you black - that being black in of itself raises suspicion. If that prejudiced judgment exists among the police making the arrests or if they are being trained that way - then yes, it is problem. Your ethnicity alone should not raise anyone's suspicion of distrust.

If 68% of crimes involve black suspects, and 24% involve Hispanic suspects, then I don't think the percentages of people stopped are all that unreasonable. If 68% of crimes involved white suspects, but only 8% of the people stopped were white, then there would definitely be a problem.

You have to separate the act of being stopped with the act of committing a crime. As strait forward as those statistics may seem, there is no correlation between being black and criminal behavior and law enforcement cannot decide to keep a look out for blacks because chances are they're gonna be committing a crime. There's a danger in making such a conclusion as it threatens our constitutional rights. The police shouldn't be able to harass you because you are black, even if the odds are against you that you may commit a crime.

NEW YORK: JUDGMENT AWARDED IN RACIAL PROFILING LAWSUIT.

A judge awarded Sheryl Champen-Brown, compensation for mental anguish when the Oneonta police violated her civil rights. Following a sweeping search for a suspect that attacked an elderly woman in 1992 in Oneonta, NY. The police questioned and searched black students and the police also questioned Champen-Brown even though the suspect they sought was not a woman.

...it's a clear violation of civil rights.
