tbh i feel safer just knowing that if i wanted to go buy a gun, i could. i agree with everything you said, except i don't really think it's possible to make swift changes at a federal level on any issue. our government is limping at a snail's pace. but suggest bombing somewhere in the middle east, we'll make that ish happen quick.

Yeah bombing other countries doesn't get voted on by the public or addressed by the supreme court. Pretty easy for the Kenyan to unilaterally do what he wants in the case of military action. Even if a vote from congress was required in the case of this ISIS thing, who wants to be the guy that votes against it and then have a bunch of negative campaign commercials come out stating you support Osama bin Laden and Muslim terrorists.

There is a common thread here across a number of topics - Fear.

  • Fear of communists, socialists and liberals.
  • Fear of being beheaded by religious extremists.
  • Fear of immigrants and criminal gangs.
  • Fear of being a victim of violent youth.

All of these things have to be viewed against the insistence that owning a gun and daily 'defensive drill' training is necessary for a person to survive in the USA in 2014. Anything less is to be a victim.

It's a mind-set I just can't get my head around. It is very paranoid.

You can say that again.

As I say the paranoia is quite disturbing.

LIB doesn't like to be called paranoid, but that's what comes across in his posts - the idea of imminent threat, that around any corner a violent offender could jump out and kick your head in, that there's a real threat of being bushwhacked and beheaded by religious extremists, that a person who doesn't train or arm themselves is irresponsible.

That's just not a mind-set that I can relate to.

I think that those who see guns as a 'safety device' in that way have a callous 'hair-trigger' attitude to life.

Or, if you're shopping in Krogers, someone is going to jump out of a box of Corn Flakes and beat the ish out of you.

Looking purely at the imagery there is no difference.

The images are only different when people bring their own prejudices into it.

People only rage when it's a perceived slight against them. This is why the riots in Hong Kong are being discussed without any negativity

Pretty much. Hell, I catch flack for just saying I'm a Muslim IRL again since this whole beheading thing with the guy.
