Hello everyone,

I spoke with a customer rep. at the NVC (after a 40 minute wait) for general questions about the AoS sheet since I have to file jointly.

Here's my situation; I am a university student, and have been for the past 3 years so I, naturally, did not file taxes because I did not work.

Though my parents (Filed jointly as married) claimed me as a dependent on 2013 tax returns. I got married in January.

So time has come to fill out the AoS portion, and my mind has been spinning crazy.

Here are my questions:

I have to fill out i-864 for myself, correct?

I have to fill out i-864 for my father, correct?

I have to fill out i-864 for my mother, correct?

I have to fill out i-864a, one for my mother and one for my father, is this correct?

I'm sorry if this question has been answered, I've searched and searched, for a couple weeks, on this topic and couldn’t find anyone who is a student like myself.

3 I-864's.

1. one I-864 on you, showing 0 prior year tax data and current annual income of 0.

2. one I-864 on your father

3. one I-864A on your mother.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Thanks for your reply!

Another question, on Part 6 of MY i-864 , 6a would be blank, Part 6 line 10 - would be 0, line 11 would be unchecked, part 7 would be also left blank,

OR on those sections, would I put my father's information?

This is where the confusion has stemmed.

I came across this post from about a year ago, and it helped me understand the process.

I will file i-864 for myself and I will have my father file the i-864 for himself (I do not need mother's income to reach the threshold...so I won't include her)

My father will include tax transcripts, last years W2s, and two most recent paystubs. He will also include other documents to prove asset values. (Bank, Stock Investments, and Value of House). (Along with the proof of citizenship and MY birth certificate to prove relation.)

Hopefully I won't receive a checklist.

Didn't fully grasp when a i-864a is used.

Hopefully this helps everyone else in the same situation! :star: :star:

please restudy post #3.

if still confused, after reading the instructions,

find the NVC Monthly thread for July 2014, and read all in that topic.

Restudy post #3?

I went through the July Monthly thread, this is what I found:

http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/NVC_Process#Step_3_-_AOS_Fee

"The I-864A is used for household members of sponsors. Typically, the only time I recommend using the I-864A is for spouses of joint sponsors who are deciding to contribute their income as well. So, in these cases, the petitioner would file an I-864, the main joint sponsor would file an I-864 as well, and then the joint sponsor's spouse would file an I-864A."

Spouse of joint sponsor is not going to be included in THIS situation...therefore I do not need the I-864a, am I missing something?

What's the point of going through the hassle of the extra documentation to include the salary of my mother ($45,000) if my father's salary is $100,000? Joint ($145,000).

What you're saying: Because they filed jointly on taxes, then 2 I-864 and an I-864a.

What I'm saying: Only my father's salary is going to be used since it's well above the poverty line so I need one I-864 (myself) and another I-864 (My father).

don't do it the way I've suggested, expect a really nasty 'checklist letter response' dinging you for the lack of the I-864A.
