My mother-in-law and father-in-law want to come and visit my wife and I in the United States.

They cannot afford to pay for their trip, so we would be paying for them.

On the DS160 - whose name should appear as the one paying for the trip - my name or my wife's name ?

I am a US Citizen and my wife is a Green Card holder. Also I make more money than my wife, even though our bank accounts are joint and tax returns our jointly filed.

Finally, whether it is worth something or not, we will also create a letter of invitation to invite them to come visit us in the United States.

Whose name should appear on the Letter of Invitation as the one inviting them? The same as the person paying for the trip?

In your case, it could be either you or your wife or both of you together (probably better) can write them a letter stating you would like your in laws to visit for some reason like visit family or sightseeing etc, then itemize the possible expenses for your in laws by giving rough estimation and show that you are more than capable of taking care of them.

For example:

Return Air ticket: $xyz

Accommodation : Free, they will be staying with you

Food: $xyz

Transportation around town: $ xyz

Misc: $ xyz

------------------------

Total=

Then state what is your salary and how you can afford the above mentioned expenses.

I am speaking from experience as I wrote such letter twice for my parents, and each time they got their visas and no one looked at any finance papers, neither at the consulate nor at the POE. But send the letter, just in case.

On DS -260 you could put either name or both if there is space for both names.

Thank you for the responses. One more question - should the invitation letter be addressed to the Embassy? Or should it be a personal letter to my relatives?

I imagine the letter addressed to the Embassy is more important - but is there any reason to have both kinds of letters available?
