This is a long shot but...I have a Canadian class 1 license, and was told by a DOT guy that I could just transfer it over to a CDL. After calling an official they say no, I have to do the whole test thing. Has anyone had experience of this? To complicate things I just got a DL medical that has to be done in 45 days, and it'll be iffy if I'll be getting my US one by then. Obviously if it doesn't transfer over it doesn't matter. I can get a chauffeurs license but I suspect that won't get me a 1 if I move back to Canada at some point. Yeesh!!

Different states have different requirements. If Iowa states you need to do the tests all over again, then that is what you need to do. Driving laws are different in each state as well so that is the primary concern for many departments of Driver Services.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
