Social Security Number question...

Hello,

I have a quick question. My mother lived in the United States under a green card from 1989 to 2005 and then left the country to move back to her home country of England. She gave up her residency and we just recently reapplied for it and she just got her visa and moved back over this past weekend. The customs agent told her to make sure to contact the social security office to get a number. Does she get a new social security number or does she keep her existing one? She has good credit and will be eligible to draw from social security benefits when she turns 62 1/2. Thank you for your help!

(organizer hat off)

If she already has a SSN from her previous US residency period, that one is still valid. She may want to look at the difference in the SS benefits payout based upon her age:

Good luck on her immigration journey.
