Hello all, I hope I'm posting in the correct forum. Please bear with me; it's been a frustrating application process for me.

This is for an I-485 application.

I had my biometrics in April. Sometime in early May, my case status online read that I was scheduled for an interview on May 28th and that a letter had been sent out. I eagerly awaited the arrival of said letter.

Unfortunately, there was a mess-up at my local post office and the letter was marked "undeliverable" and returned to USCIS. FYI: I did NOT change addresses. That was the first time I was not able to receive a letter from USCIS.

On May 19th, I called USCIS' 1-800 number and spoke with an agent about the matter. She said she'll do a service request to have the letter resent. I asked her, "does that mean the interview date will be moved?" She could not provide me with any other information other than the textbook reply, "you'll hear from us within 30 days".

I then assumed that they would have to reschedule the interview seeing how it would be highly unlikely that I would get the letter before the 28th.

Well, imagine my shock when I saw my new case status online on the 28th itself -- the original date of the interview. It said I failed to appear that day!

What I don't understand is that I called them way before the 28th to address the issue. The agent even provided me with a confirmation number of the service request. I would think that her action would have notified my local field office that I had called about the undelivered letter and they would have rescheduled the interview. But now it's looking to them that I had abandoned my application!

In a panic, I called USCIS and got an agent who didn't even bother to get my receipt number. All he could tell me was to ignore the case status online since it didn't actually reflect what was going on with my case. I find it appalling that he indirectly admitted that there's no real coordination among their centers and their website.

Already flustered and angry at that point, I then wrote a letter to my field office outlining what took place and that it was not my fault that I did not receive the letter. Not sure if that would help, though.

I'd like to hear from the forum people concerning the following issues:

1. Have any of you experienced the same thing? Have you received conflicting pieces of information from the USCIS website and agents, reading one thing online and being told another by an agent?

2. If you have experienced not receiving the interview letter, calling to have it resent, only to see that you were marked as a no-show, what steps did you take to rectify it?

3. As of this writing, it's been 10 days since I first called USCIS about the undeliverable letter. Would it be hasty on my part to contact a lawyer now about my issue? Or should I still wait for that letter the agent promised would be resent before seeking legal counsel?

I will surely be upset beyond words if I see my case status online reading that I was denied, all because of a postal error and the lack of coordination within USCIS. :(
