Passport renewal question

Here's the situation. My minor son was born in the Philippines. He holds a U.S. passport that I need to get renewed. I understand that sending in his expiring passport is proof of his U.S. citizenship. What I am not clear on is the documentation needed to establish that we are his parents. I have a certified copy of his Philippines birth certificate here, showing me as the father, and my wife as his mother. Ordinarily, this would be sufficient.

However, at the time he was born we were not yet married. His birth certificate has his mother's 'maiden' name on it. It's in the safe deposit box at the moment, but I recall that somehow the B.C. states we are not married.

Question: do I need to send in a certified copy of our marriage license as well, or not?

All minors age 15 and under who have or have not had a passport in the past must apply in person using form DS-11...

So you need to go to the post office or any places who accept or process passport application. Both parents or guardian must be present at the time of application for swearing and will be asked for identification

By the way, his birth certificate should have annotation/ remarks if you did the amendment of his bc after you guys got married...that's how it is in the Philippines if you have a child before marriage, sadly the child cannot use the father's family name unlike here

That's demonstrably false. My son has my name, we never amended anything. His birth certificate was issued before we were married and guess what? He has my name on it, listing me as his father. He also has a Philippines passport with my last name, and a U.S. passport with my last name.

as you mention on your first post listed you as a father what i meant is the annotation/remarks on his bc he will be having your last name...just saying since you worry about not having ur last name on his bc

OK, I see the confusion now. It seems I wasn't clear and I owe you an apology. When I said "His birth certificate has his mother's 'maiden' name on it" I meant that under "mother" it has her maiden name rather than her married name. My son's name has my last name.
