I also went abroad last year and got married while I was a green card holder. After I filed for my citizenship I didn't put married on my forms and put single because I only had a nikkah done as in papers from court that we were married but no family reception. I just went back had a reception and while I came back my interview letter came for citizenship. During my interview I mentioned to the officer about the miscommunication and he changed it from single to married which wasn't a problem. The thing is it got changed in my interview which wasn't a problem. If your friend didnt mention it during the time hell have to most likely send out an affidavit during the application process as to why he didn't mention It etc. my lawyer told me to do that so I did but luckily I didn't need it :). Just tell your friend to write an affidavit about the miscommunication etc hopefully it won't be a problem as long as he has proof of his marriage with all documents required. Best of luck!
