So for some reason, we filed CR1 with my maiden name as a middle name, but I don't really like that because my last name is a last name, not a middle name!

My name appears as following:

Social security card: Yuka Watanabe Smith

GC: Yuka W Smith

Japanese passport: Yuka Watanabe (Smith)

Driver's lisence: Yuka Watanabe

Can I file I-751 with Yuka (first), Watanabe-Smith (last), with no middle name instead of

Yuka Watanabe Smith like it is now? Or is it better if I keep the way it is now?

Which one is more convenient?

Thank you!

I would think, if you want to change your last name, you'd have to change it with Social Security first and have a new SS card issued with the new name. Then get your driver's license updated with the new last name.

My wife went with making her maiden name into a middle name. It's up to you if you prefer the hyphenated last name. It might be easier to finish the I-751 first and then change your last name.

My wife also registered our marriage with her koseki and updated her status with the LA Japanese consulate and her new Japanese Passport has her new last name (my last name).
