Hi everyone,

I have a quick question. I sent all my originals of marriage certificate and my husband's birth certificate to the U.S. from Ecuador so my dad would be ready to send to NVC for me. However, NVC recently accepted my case for Expedite and so my dad had to send my paperwork back. That was supposed to arrived in 6 days (today) but it hasn't and the Guayaquil consulate set my interview appt for tomorrow. Can anyone tell me if I can submit photocopies of originals certified from the Registro Civil here? Or do I need to go get the originals? Originals would be from Quito and Macas and I live in Riobamba. Please help!

Thanks,

Jackie

The consulate shouldn't require original documents unless requested. A simple photocopy should be sufficient providing it is translated in to English and the translator declaration basically stating the attached translation is a copy of the original and the translator is fluent and conversant in English and Spanish. This does not have to me notarized.

Here's the link to the actual declaration required by USCIS http://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-and-fees/general-tips-assembling-applications-mailing

Now to make life easier in the usa get all copies of marriage certificates and birth certificates certified by the chief of the Registrio Civil, they stamp it and sign it saying its an official document and go to the "MMRREE" and get it apostilled. That makes it legal in most of the world ( hauge convention contries) and you shouldn't have any issues.

The consulate in Guayaquil has moved as well to a new location you should have the updated information already.

Also heads up the Ecuador postal system is slow. It only takes a few days for the stuff to arrive in Quito but to get to the rest of the country takes for ever. Make sure anything gets sent registered or with a tracking number. I learned my lesson before, surprisingly mail leaving Ecuador makes it to the usa relatively fast.
