Hello

i'm just getting ready to apply for my naturalization. I'm a 3rd year medical student and last year i didn't file for any taxes since i had 0 income and was solely living off Student loans.

The question on Part 11 asks have you ever not filed a federal, state or local tax return since you became a permanent resident? to which i would have to say No, since last year i made nothing, (less than 5000$ dont have to file for taxes) i was wondering if that was going to be a problem

i'm not even sure if i should put No or Yes given that i wasnt required to file.

any help would be Appreciated

thanks in advance

Hello there,

Since I just went through this a few months ago for similar reasons........for the question about not filed you would say no. You will need tax transcripts for the past 3 years-- you can use form 4506-T from the irs- I believe you can call them too but not sure if they will give you a copy of the verification of nonfiling. On the form you would need to check the box for #7 Verification of Nonfiling, which is proof from the IRS that you did not file a return for the year. It is no big deal. We had no problems with my wife's interview. Just make sure that when you have your interview that you have an extra set of them, since the agent asked for them.

Stepdaughter was in the same situation as yours, but filed taxes for her regardless, even with a zero income, just to keep the USCIS happy. You do not need to have an income to file tax returns. Who knows, may even get a couple of bucks back.
