Driving License

Hey there everyone!

Just thought i'd picked your brains on the issue of drivers licenses. I moved here from England and have an English drivers license. Does anyone know any useful websites related to switching from a UK to a US license? I live in NY state, and i'm not to keen on taking a new drivers test. I've heard that in some states you don't have to take the full test. Although i haven't found anywhere that lists which states differ in this regard.

Any help, is, as always, wildly appreciated!!

It looks like you will have to take a new drivers test after all...

http://www.dmv.ny.gov/license.htm#driversfromothernations - "If you have a driver license from any nation except Canada, you must pass a written test, complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course and pass a road test to qualify for a NYS driver license."

But don't worry - American written and road tests are much easier than the ones in Europe...

Hi Jon. I'd recommend checking out this link http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/361739-quick-reference-guide-for-state-level-services/. It provides links to state specific information regarding driver's licenses, since every state has different policies and procedures. I can't speak for New York, but Illinois requires a social security number and you must have your EAD. My husband did have to take the test and he also had to take a road test. Assuming you have to take a paper test, you should easily be able to do a google search on rules of the road in NY.

Im just going through the same thing here but in Maryland,ive had to sit a written drugs and alcohol test,and a written driving test and i have a driving test later this month,there isnt any other option really to get a licence here,the good thing is that the written tests are a doddle,so much easier than the UK tests, and going on what ive experienced with the quality of driving expertise since living here, im anticipating that the driving test wont be too hard either,so just do it
