Question on item #12: Certificate of Marriage of Beneficiary's Mother and Father.

Is that really necessary? What happens if you don't bring it along?

Dunno, but I will definitely find out! I will not have one with me as there is none in my case.

I understand "red tape" but this requirement is bogus and obtrusive. Why does the US Govt

stop at just the parents paperwork??? Why not demand marriage certificates and FULL depositions

from Grand and Great Grandparents???

How about a declaration from Simon Bolivar himself???

Bottom line, I will not be presenting one, so if you can't obtain yours then you will have company! :)

Cheers!

George

P.S. Does anybody know if the I-864 (to be sent to NVC) form MUST be notorized? I'm doing my papers here

in Colombia, so it will be impossible to get it notorized by a US notary! Did anybody submit a NON notorized

set of I-864 papers and was successful?

The I-864 is not required to be notarized according to the DOS website: "The sponsor signature on Form

I-864 does not need to be notarized since the sponsor is signing under penalty of perjury." Go to page 8 of the following link:

Thank you KathyB! I had seen several sources that state it needs to be notorized. Your clarifiaction is very helpful

and eases my mind a bit.

Everyone is free to do as they wish. However, if something is required and you do not provide, the embassy has justification to delay or deny you. Do you really want that? I realize that some of the requirements sound stupid (for example, the requirement of a baptism certificate)...and there are some that I can't justify. But since when does the U.S. government care what I or you think?

Documents such as birth certificates and marriage certificates are handled by notaries in Colombia. I would think that, in most cases, it would not be too hard to get a marriage certificate for the beneficiary's parents...of the parents do not have a copy.

I agree Mike, if they ask for it then one should do everything reasonable to find it. So many times we complain about what they ask for. Bottom line, it is not up to us to decide what they want to see. It is up to us to try to provide it or at least something indicating our attempts or quite possibly end up with some negative results. I agree with you George, it si ridiculous but my wife got hers from the parents. I am not leaving anything to chance I can take care of. No need to bring on unneeded grief in the process. Ask others who have been missing a document and the rest of the interview went south from there. Better safe than defiant here.

Hi Doug & Mike :)

Thanks for replying. It's not about being defiant. As Monty Python put it: "It's a simple case of NON-presence"!

As I said, in my case "there is none".

There is/was no document.

Therefore it is impossible for me to get a copy of it. Believe me I am giving the US Gov't EVERY piece of paper they ask for and then MORE! In triplicate!!!!! So it's not my choice. I don't care to get into family specifics, but not all people get "formally married", and then sometimes a parent passes away, very young. Many countries, just like Colombia, have people who come from remote, ultra-rural regions where life is lived a little more simpler than all of us "City Folk" that have all of our certified papers and official permission slips!

Maybe one of you can lend me a copy of your's? Cause it is "that" or nothing for me. :(

Ok, ok. 2 six packs of Aquilla Beer for the first copy!

Thanks in advance.

George

For two six packs I will do about anything. I know you would not do anything to put your future in danger but here on VJ some what some people say makes me wonder. I am sure Hugo would help you if he thought it would irritate our Presidente. I also know what you mean about the simple life in remote countryside in Colombia, my wife is from one of those small towns. Gotta love that life, so simple. Anyway good luck.

Hey George, it has been a dead thread lately. I am preparing everything for our interview next week in Bogota. Taking longer than I thought but getting it done. Nice to have the week off before I go down next Wednesday, interview Thursday and with any luck will be returning Saturday with my wife. Either way I am heading back, she will follow later if necesary. Other than that, Floridaphoto and his wife have returned, had some problems but sure he will apprise everyone later. Take care

Irene Ceci is at her parents house visiting, maybe she will be in touch, can't say for sure. I thought she talked to you the other day, maybe I was mistaken. In any event she seems to have more confidence in the interview than I do. I am preparing now and so is she. As for Mark and Sophia, they finally received the visa and then had trouble with the plane and repairs to it. I think, according to Mark's email, they got home Monday, he was very frustrated by the whole ordeal and as you know not feeling well to begin with. Anyway all is well with them and settling in. I will talk with Ceci today, tell her to get a hold of you. Thanks for your help.

Doug

Hey George, it has been a dead thread lately. I am preparing everything for our interview next week in Bogota. Taking longer than I thought but getting it done. Nice to have the week off before I go down next Wednesday, interview Thursday and with any luck will be returning Saturday with my wife. Either way I am heading back, she will follow later if necesary. Other than that, Floridaphoto and his wife have returned, had some problems but sure he will apprise everyone later. Take care

Doug

Hi Doug :)

Thanks for breathing some life into this thread!

I imagine you're a bit nervous as the time is close, but I am sure everything wil go by the numbers for you.

I am very happy for you that you both have the interview next week, enjoy Bogota but be careful there.

What hotel are you staying at for your stay there?

Please tell us how things go at the interview!

Best,

George & Leydi

:)

Hola....

u dont have to worry for the marriage certificate of her parents! I didnt take it there, and they didnt ask me for it... If u can read the posts of BradandVicky the said that the consult return to them that paper. At the moment of give the papers in the folder they give us, the lady also return to me the Affidavit of Support, the W2 and 1040 of the last year. Not saying that u dont neeed to take them, just letting u know.

Irene

Hi Irene :)

Thanks for saying, it brings a bit of peace to know you were sucessful without the document.

Thanks for taking the time to tell me about your experience!

Best,

George & Leydi
