I don't know exactly how much in the way of belongings I'll be taking but it won't be a huge amount. No very large items, furniture, very little in the way of housewares. Mainly books, clothes, misc small things, personal electronics, art supplies. I plan to take as much as I can as baggage but I won't get everything in. I thought about posting my stuff to myself but it seems to be very expensive. Any other ideas?

I shipped boxes over, 2 day service by UPS through this company, they were fantastic. I shipped 12 cardboard boxes filled with clothes, CD's, DVD's, books, tools etc i just filled the online customs form for each box and put on " house contents, relocating" not one was stopped, inspected or charged for. They pick up from your house abd even called the day after to make sure everything went smoothly. FUll online tracking for each box and boxes were there in 2 days!

£52 a box, goes down the more you send, mine were £46 a box as i sent a few at a time. You can send a 18" x18" x18" box upto 20kg for that price!

Do you have your visa yet? If not, if you visit any time before moving day and now (or if your fiancé visits you) use your baggage allowance to take stuff over. That's what I've done for the last few trips for things like books, artwork etc.

Hopefully when I move, the suitcase I take out with me will be full of nothing but clothes :P

I am in the same boat, have just started looking in to this. I was surprised that some airlines will allow you to take extra bags - up to 10 each, on Virgin Atlantic for example. http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/gb/en/travel-information/baggage/additional-baggage.html

At a cost of £120 per bag for up to 23kg, this might work well for us, as we have about 40 million suitcases between the two of us. I didnt think it was a horrible price. Also we will probably fly direct from London - San Francisco, so no need to worry about connecting flights.

I will let you know if I come across any other options.

depends on the dimensions of the box you can ship vs dimension of the suitcase I suppose, and the dimensions of the items you are trying to ship. £46 a box is ridiculously cheap compared to any other shipping company I have found, which was about the same cost or more expensive as a suitcase. But I'll definitely look in to that website as well.

Isnt £120 a bag very expensive when you can ship the same weight for £46 a box in 2 days?

The company is a shipping consolidator, that's why they can do cheap prices, i shipped two electric guitars in one box, box was massive! and wasn't even £120, its worth pricing them up.

Five x 80cm x 60cm x 35cm suitcases shipped as is with 25kg in each is £385 (£77 each!)

Yes I have, and I tried taking stuff with me on past visits but it never really worked out. I would need some of my art supplies and clothes in the UK too, so the suitcase never came back very much emptier!

Right now my partner has a lot of my occasional dresses and not much else XD
