I've completed form DS160 online. My question is do I now wait for packet 3 to arrive in the mail or do I create an account, make the visa payment and schedule an interview at the London consulate on the visa appointment service website? Thanks

Unfortunately you cannot make your own appointment at the London consulate. You have to wait for them to make it for you after hey have received all of your paperwork. If you haven't already had your medical, go get it done, and it usually takes 4-6 weeks to get your appointment from the point that they received packet 3 and your medical results.

Did you read this page? http://london.usembassy.gov/iv/notification_of_applicant_readiness_form.html Then click the link at the end to go to the form to submit.

Don't pay the fee until you have been assigned an appointment date. Follow the instructions EXACTLY found at the end of this K1 interview letter http://photos.state.gov/libraries/unitedkingdom/164203/cons-visa/IV019_fiance_appt_letter.pdf. (bookmark or print that)

If you go in the wrong order, you can't recover and will end up making an appointment for a student or tourist visa or scheduling the courier and can't get back to the paying section. The appointments that are self-scheduled on the website ARE NOT K1 appointments, so don't think you found a lucky shortcut. You have to wait for London to assign it and send a letter.
