What happens when somebody is "inline" for N-400 Interview? Do additional background checks happen during inline status?

Hello everybody.I'm new here and did some research about the timelines.I have noticed that people in the same local offices who have had very similar filing dates, eligibility dates, and biometrics appointments still could have a lot of variation from getting Inline to get scheduled for the N400 Interview. What determines this change in status? Is it additional background checks after getting inline? Some people suggest that it's the work load at the local office but then how people that file after you get scheduled for the interview before you? Is the process totally random if it is within normal processing time period? Any inputs and opinions are very welcome. Thanks

It depends on the field office. They schedule interview according to your priority date and your field office. So for example Hialaeh, FL might be 2 months behind and West Palm Beach, FL is current. So a person who filed after you if he is in west palm beach then he gets the interview first and you will be waiting another 2 months for yours.

Also depends if you are filing with military background as they are expedited
