Does it need to be original?

Steve forgot to send me the new letter of intent to marry addressed to USEM so he just scanned it for me.

Is this going to be fine?

Thanks Daven. I hope they won't ask me again. Though,I have the original of old ones but are not addressed to USEM.

I'd say so. The ones in the I-129F needed to be original, IIRC, but I don't think USEM even looked at ours again. After all, they are in the packet they get from NVC.

Like DavenRoxy (and many other VJ members) attested, their interviewers didn't ask or even looked at their letter of intent.

However, you never really know what the interviewers will ask and they can be very random about it. Best be prepared. If you have time to have an original one sent and signed, I'd say go for it. Doesn't hurt to be prepared for anything.

The Letter of Intent is not actually listed in the embassy instructions letter.

The instructions letter only asks about YOU in reality, and that you have a clear intent to marry within 90 days. You will sign a sworn statement to this effect at the embassy in front of the CO during the interview when you sign the DS-156K.

k. EVIDENCE OF A GENUINE ENGAGEMENT. You must be prepared to prove to the consular officer
that you have a genuine relationship with your petitioner and a clear intention to marry within 90 days of
admission into the U.S. In the past, successful applicants have submitted photographs, letters, e-mails,
phone records, bank records, and remittance records as evidence supporting their relationships and intent to
marry.
No where does it ask for a letter from the petitioner, your fiance, in fact it does not ask for a letter from you either.
With that said, my wife and I still have the ones we brought to the interview, as well as many, many others since and before. The CO does not ask for Letters of Intent.
Yup you will be fine with a copy. ;)

Thanks Hank! That answers my question. I just want to make sure I have everything they will ask for, as other members here have mentioned the Letter of Intent on their checklist for the interview.

Yes the letter of intent is mentioned quite often on VJ, much like a copy of the I-129F is.... but neither are listed or required in the embassy instructions letter. And the embassy doesn't ask for either. Someday they will fix the guide regarding the I-129F and LOI ... at least a guy can hope.

Yes, this is true. And several people have "suggested" getting certain documents notarized, or that "this document" should be an original. When in fact, the ONLY original document needed at USEM is the I-134. And yes, they DO check for indentations in the paper from the pen; I usually recommend signing in blue ink to folks who are just getting their stuff together to send.

On a side note, I sent everything to the PI via email, including the I-134 (but also sent the original signed copy). Had her present the email version of the I-134, and it was rejected. Good thing I followed the instructions and sent the original! good.gif

I hope so too Hank. I know that the Letter of Intent is not the instructions letter but I thought that people who have mentioned it had a successful interview. Lol

Thanks Hank!

I have the originals of everything except that Letter of Intent which is really not required anyway. But my problem was I hand written N/A underneath that #11 on I-134. I hope I didn't mess anything. And Steve didn't put my name on question#10 but its too late to redo all this stuff now so I'll just go with it.

Thanks Daven!

You should be fine with n/a... the I-134 was not designed with the K1 in mind. Your name shouldn't be on # 10 only on # 3. So you are good.

I don't see you having an issue regarding the letter of intent.. so relax some there.

All the best
