Hi there,
As an F1 student, I already have a Social Security Number/Card (as I work on-campus) - I am wondering, once my AOS application is complete and I have my greencard, do I then have to go and get a new Social Security Card or do I keep my old one? My current card says "For employment approved by DHS only" and it's for temporary visitors etc., Does anyone know if I have to reapply for another social security card?

Your SSN will not change. It is yours for life. You don't need to request a new card. Your greencard is all the authorization you need from the DHS to work.

Good luck!

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I am guessing the only thing I will have to do, is apply for a name change so that my married name is reflected on my SS card?

Do you happen to know what will happen when I file for taxes next year - how will I file as half an F1 student, and half Permanent resident?

When you file your taxes, you would be better off filing as a resident, especially if you don't work. Married filing jointly will give you the advantage especially if you remain studying and not working.

I really dont know if you can file as 1/2 student and 1/2 resident.

Can I file as a resident if I don't have my greencard by then? For the past 3 years I have filed as a Non-resident Alien since I have been working on-campus

You can't file as a resident until you are one. Until your residence is approved in writing you can't do it. On a positive note, if you receive your residence on 12/31 you can file as a resident for the entire year.

OK - so if I don't have my greencard by the tax filing date, I will file as a Non-Resident Alien, as I have done for the past few years (even though my AOS will be in process).

Since you file your taxes for the previous year, if you don't receive your gc by 12/31/13 your status, come tax season 2014, will be non-resident.

What form do you use?

I don't remember 1040 asking for the status of the filler. It has a field for occupation and thats it.
