You always read horror stories. I've never even been asked to see my proof of ties.

What is the purpose of your visit

- i'm visiting my husband

How long will you be staying

- XX days - return on XX (normally about 7-10 days)

Where do you work?

-such and such a place

how did you meet?

-playing computer games

I've also been asked where he works and if we're doing any immigration etc...

Having a job, any job, is helpful. Heck walmart or mcdonalds is better than nothing!

sorry guess i was not clear the first time i had not planned on staying until was legally allowed too. at first was trying to decide if the k1 would be good for us but as it would jeopordize seeing my kids i am not interested in doing that. so i think we will be going the cr1 route and hope that visits can go smoothly during the waiting time as i have heard many horror stories.

Since I met my husband in early 2011 I travelled from Ontario to SA Texas every month for almost a year, then he moved to a border city to be closer to me....I then crossed every weekend for 9 months until Canada allowed him to enter on a TRP....I cross at least 2 times a month to check on his house in USA...knock on wood; i have never had a problem crossing to visit him....i was honest and straight answers....I carry a file with me with all my ties to Canada and a status of my CR1 application in case they call me into secondary....

The horror stories are famous because the legions of Canadians who legally cross the border in the US to meet their relatives and loved ones during the application waiting period aren't posting regularly going "I had a normal trip again." :)

16 May 2005 - Assembled health package, W2s.
27 June 2005 - Sent package off to Chicago lockbox.
28 June 2005 - Package received at Chicago lockbox.
11 July 2005 - RFE: cheques inappropriately placed.
18 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-485, I-131, I-765 received!
19 July 2005 - NOA 1: I-130 received!
24 August 2005 - Biometrics appointment (Naperville, IL).
25 August 2005 - AOS touched.
29 August 2005 - AP, EAD, I-485 touched.
15 September 2005 - AP and EAD approved!

I like this comment. Let me add to it:

I crossed the border on a regular basis for 3.5 years before my husband and I were married. I did it sometimes with the kids, sometimes without. There was one time when I got the magic random number to be sent to secondary on our way in but they didn't even ask any questions other than how long I was staying. I've never had to show proof of ties or my custody paperwork for the kids.

After we got married and during our applicaiton process I continued to cross on a regular basis. Again, never any problems at all. Ever.

I can say that I'm fortunate, but I also think that what I have dealt with is more the norm than not for Canadians crossing the border.

LIke Autumnal said, we don't come talk about how great our crossings are. We just come when they don't go as expected.
