I've asked similar to this before but this really worries me for some reason. In my explanation for how we met, I didn't mention when we became engaged but I'm thinking I should, right? (I haven't filed yet, am gathering documents). I'm concerned because, well, my engagement date is BEFORE my divorce date. Now, being engaged I realize isn't a legal status but an emotional one and I have seen the USCIS people don't consider you engaged for visa purposes until you file the petition, so...this shouldn't be an issue, right? Him proposing to me then was more a "I want to marry you when we are legally able to" than a "let's go get hitched right now".

How did you meet means ...came face to face in the last two years because it's a requirement. You don't have to say when you got engaged. When in the last two years did you go to the UK, he to the US, or you met up in Bermuda. Just let them know when and how you were together in person during the last two years. You seem to be over thinking this and that story about when USCIS considers you engaged. They don't really care if you were "engaged". They want you free to marry before you file a petition.

My (now former) husband and I got engaged before my divorce from my first husband was made final. Because of delays, we didn't get the decree absolute until less than 2 weeks before he and I were married. We filed for the CR1 and the only thing that was necessary for an approval was to explain our timeline of how we met and how that worked in with the breakdown of my first marriage. Since we were married well over a year after we met, and nearly two years after my first husband and I separated, it was not an issue. As Nich says, all they care about is if you are free to marry at the time you file the I-129F.
