U-Haul and Penske both want to force me to take 6 days (for about 780 bucks) to drive their smallest moving truck from Minneapolis, MN to Brooklyn, NY.

I really only need 1.5 or, ok, 2. I have at least two friends who will be helping me drive, and the drive itself should take just 1 of the days. I am moving very little stuff and the only thing one person couldn't carry would be my small couch. The whole moving part shouldn't take that long.

Does anyone know or has anyone used a moving company that would not force me to buy 6 days worth of the effing truck?

Hey Alex, I used to work for U-Haul many years ago. I'd recommend looking into renting a medium sized pick-up one way (from Budget or some other car rental co.) and then rent a trailer from U-Haul. The catch is that you'll need make sure the truck you rent has a bumper so they can put a temporary hitch on it for the trailer. You'll need to be sure the truck rental covers if you were to haul a trailer on the back of it. But, if you talking about very little to move, that would probably be your cheapest route.

Alex, for what it's worth...you can get a Budget 10 foot truck for $678.00, and they give you 4 days, unlimited miles.

Yeaahh... that's the best price I found too. I started looking at Ikea furniture, trying to see if just replacing all my stuff might be cheaper. A quick scan of the online catalog got me so worried I started looking at the "Ikea jobs" section.

That might be worth it if you could reduce the stuff your moving down to be able to fit into a car with a good size trunk or add one of those rooftop storage shells (U-Haul) rents.

One way rentals are for 5-6 days from what I gathered. I rented from Budget and paid something in the vicinity of $1,000.00 for their mid-size truck (F-350), a tow dolly and some moving utensils. Not that bad a deal, if you ask me considering that we were doing a 1,000 mile move. It's a buck a mile plus gas...

I don't remember it being for 5-6 days. I was able to rent a U-haul for just 3 going from Marietta (metro Atlanta) to Laurel (between DC and Balto). As far as I remember, it cost about 580 (including tax) plus about $230 gas.

Tried Penske once from Dallas to Atlanta (3 days travelling), and decided I much prefer the U-haul (the bench-seat of a U-haul is a LOT more comfy when one is tired than the odd-angle, nonreclinable buckets of a Penske) and Budget from Dallas-Memphis (2 days total, with a DIESEL 15-footer; comfortwise similar to U-haul with addition of nearly nonfunctional tapedeck--no sound suppression in these diesel trucks--and added hassle of having to record certain mileage points in log).
