The most articulate advocate for national gun control legislation might be a convicted felon and federal prisoner. Gary W. Bornman, a bank robber who’s currently incarcerated in the Supermax federal prison in Florence, Colo., recently wrote a letter to the Hartford Courant that ought to embarrass anyone who opposes background checks for gun buyers. The Courant ran the letter under a classic headline: “Felon Thanks The NRA.” Here’s how it began:

As a lifelong career criminal, although I no longer enjoy the right to keep and bear arms, I'd like to take a moment to express my appreciation to the National Rifle Association for nonetheless protecting my ability to easily obtain them through its opposition to universal background checks.

Yup, that's what the NRA is all about and takes care of - easy access to firearms for felons and the insane. A fine organization indeed making sure that the tree of liberty gets his blood regularly and plentiful. The next NRA membership drive - known to non NRA members as mass murder - is probably already in the making.

Felons don't oppose the NRA, just like the prison industry doesn't oppose mandatory minimums.

The entire opposition to simple checks is beyond common sense and it imposes no limits to anyone's freedom; except the criminals and the mentally challenged (And no, I don't mean the GOP.).

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

One can flood the forum with misquotes and nonsense, rather than discuss how the NRA is arming felons and paranoid schizophrenics.

Sure, anything that takes attention away from the fact that the NRA continues to support easy access to firearms for all the criminals and the mentally ill out there. I suppose a good bit of their membership fits the bill which is why they're working so hard to keep the doors to gun ownership wide open to that very segment of society.
