Hello everyone,

My husband is debating moving to Manila Philippines for a job with an international NGO headquartered in Manila, its a 2 yrs position and doesnt not sponsor me to travel with him.

Currently we both are here in US, I have a amazing job here which I just started since Jan 2013 ( came to US from UK in April 2012) however if my husband took his job then I dont want to be alone here with out him.

Byposting the question here, I am asking the the locals (Philippione) to assit me on few questions:

1. How Difficult it is to get a work visa for a non phillipino?

2. Most of the jobs online are stricly for Philipinos only, does that mean it impossible to find a job there?

3. What are the best websites to look for jobs in Manila

4. Is it easy to come to Philippines on a tourist visa and later get a work permit if I can find a job?

A brief about me: I am in my mid 20's, with Masters from UK and over 6 yrs of international experince.

I hope to get some help on the above questions, so my hubby and I can decide if him moving to Manila is a good move or not.

Thanks

P

You finding a job there could be slim at best. To be granted a work visa without having a job secured before your arrival... even slimmer, you pretty much have to be sponsored by a company, the same as what is offered your husband.

Here are a few links

http://immigration.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=5&id=20&Itemid=52

http://immigration.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=78&Itemid=52

http://immigration.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=74&Itemid=52

http://immigration.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=72&Itemid=52

Lastly, you do realize that if you are out of the USA for an extended time it could adversely affect your status, as in they could cancel your green card and you would be in the Philippines without status to enter the USA without applying for a visa?

I don't know the answers to most of your questions unfortunately. If you decide to move to the Philippines, I suggest looking into getting a job in the BPO (Call Center) field since you speak English fluently. You can move up to become a Communication Trainer, etc. The pay is pretty good compared to most entry level jobs in the Philippines.

Good luck and I hope you're able to get the answers you are looking for!

It is very rare for a foreigner to be issued a work permit without having been able to secure a contract prior to entry. The laws set up in the Philippines are designed to protect domestic workers. A company has to prove that there is no possibility to find a local worker able to fill the position. In effect this prevents foreigners from working almost any job outside upper management in multinationals.

Your only other option would be to invest in a business (of which you are restricted to less than 50% ownership) and go to work for yourself. This will still require a mountain of paperwork as well as paying fees and taxes that would likely make the proposition undesirable. The vast majority of foreign business owners I know there are married to a local and run businesses because they are bored and not for the money (which is not going to be all that great to be honest).

This would never happen, unless you're sent from the states to assist in helping/setting up the call center..

There are zero jobs you will want in the Philippines unless you are hired by a foreign company or person. If your husband has a great job, go there and look for business oportunities. Of course, most likely you will need a filipino to be involved..

Filipino?

2. Most of the jobs online are stricly for Philipinos only, does that mean it impossible to find a job there?

McDonald's requires 4 year college drgrees. Department stores, "sales ladies" same education but on 6 month, usually never-renewable, one shot in a lifetime, ever positions.

3. What are the best websites to look for jobs in Manila

Notthing that would not make your mother blush. Best hit the streets and papers once you arrive, bring lots of money in case it takes a while. You should have a reasonable living from your husband's job, don't be fooled into 1000's of Euros worth rent per month for safety that is both non-existant and ridiculous. Live middle of the road, dress down and try to blend in.

4. Is it easy to come to Philippines on a tourist visa and later get a work permit if I can find a job?

Visa on arrival, easy as buka pie.The businesses have enough over educated talent avaialble to them at a pittance for them to consider recruiting foreigners. However, there are call centers in Makati and on Clark that hire voice/dialect deprogramming specialists and customer service managers in Yankee speak.

TEFOL certificate teaching English, or a cash gig as a mamasan/bar manager in a go-go bar.

Any job is a good job. An amazing job is not to be messed with. Can you use Skype?

P.S. Additionally, you can tavel to see him often. Easy to get a 59 day extended visa in advance at the local Pilippine Consulate and then extend your visa at a travel agency, hotel or at the Bureau of Immagration for about $50 for 2 months. Skype is you friend.

This should be an interesting article to non-Filipinos married to Philippine citizens and planning to move to the Philippines

Why Tim Cone and Norman Black can coach in the PBA and how Rajko Toroman can too

With the Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines (BCAP) blocking ex-Gilas head coach Rajko Toroman's appointment as head coach for Barako Bull Energy Cola in the PBA, fans may be wondering why foreigners Norman Black and Tim Cone have been allowed to do so.

While Toroman might suffer the same fate as Bill Bayno and Paul Woolpert of Talk 'N Text and John Moran of Shell, multi-titled mentors Black and Cone have been coaching in the PBA because the pair do not fall under the scope of "non-resident aliens" that governs the rule on hiring foreigners to work locally under the Labor Code of the Philippines.
Black and Cone have ceased to be non-resident aliens the moment their immigration status changed after marrying their Filipina wives. In a previous interview, Black admitted to gaining permanent residency after marrying Benjie Davila, mother of former Sta. Lucia player Chris Tan.

Cone, on the other hand, said in a feature that he has been in the Philippines since he was nine years old. The San Mig Coffee mentor even studied at a local public school in Quezon, before moving to International School Manila where he eventually met Alaska owner Fred Uytengsu. Cone eventually married DLSU alumna Cristina Viaplana, the sister of former DLSU Green Archer Eddie Viaplana.

The Department of Labor confirmed to GMA News Online through a phone interview that Cone has no recent record of a work permit. Like Black, Cone is considered a permanent resident, under the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940. Section 13(a) of the Act allows husbands of Philippine citizens to be admitted as permanent residents.

depends on his visa. if you get him a permanent resident visa, then he's excluded.from the non resident alien restriction

Re-read the OP's post. Neither are Filipino, husband has an opportunity to work in the Phils so his visa will be handled by the company... no issue. The wife (not a Filipina) is asking how hard it would be for her to get work in the Phils if she wanted to work.
