Evangelicals: Keep gay issues out of immigration

WASHINGTON (AP) Religious leaders are warning that including a gay rights amendment in a sweeping immigration bill could cost their support for the legislation.

Richard Land, a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention, told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that evangelicals are hopeful the bill will remain focused on immigration and steer clear of gay rights. But if gay rights does become part of the bill, he said, the Southern Baptist Convention will no longer be able to support it.

Other religious leaders issued similar warnings.

It comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares to take up the landmark bill on Thursday. Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy of Vermont is considering offering an amendment that would allow gay couples to sponsor their partners for U.S. residence like other married Americans can.

All that needs to happen is for the US government to recognize all legal marriages. Legally married same sex couples would then be able to enjoy immigration benefits same as any other legally married couple. That should not take an amendment in the immigration bill.

Either that or the SCOTUS to strike DOMA. I have a feeling the immigration bill will linger until the SCOTUS announces its ruling in June. Personally I would like to see the entire matter become a non-issue when DOMA is stricken. Simpler and more elegant.

Yes. That would be the best solution.

I highly doubt SCOTUS will strike down DOMA.

But SSM is becoming legal in one state at a time and eventually the numbers will be too large to ignore and Congress will finally do its job.

Same result. In that case it would go back to Federal court where it will be stricken.

Then we'd have to listen to everyone complain about processing times as a result of all the new cases. Oh wait, that is going to happen matter what.

I don't remember so much whining when I was visajourneying. There were a few whiners on VJ then, but they were the exception.

Todays VJ is so different. Processing times are down but the people have lost all semblance of reality.

The more you make things easy for folks, the more they seem to complain. Instant satisfaction is not as satisfying as something you felt like you earned.
