Hello all,

I'm 21 and me and my wife will be applying for her visa as soon as we finish getting some documents translated. However, I have a question about the sponsor and joint/co-sponsor. My dad/mom will be the joint sponsor(s). I am an unemployed student living in São Paulo while we wait out her visa, however my father has a pension and also works full-time on top of that, ultimately creating two incomes. We live very well, and taking me and my wife in for the few months (before we head off to college and finally, our own life), won't be a problem.

I just want to make sure that I won't have any problems as my dad's income and role as joint sponsor will show clear evidence to be able to care for me and my wife regarding any of the possibilities the US worries about (becoming public charge, etc.) Has anyone been through this type of situation before?

Thanks all,

J

Are you asking if it's a problem if the joint sponsor makes more money than the principal sponsor (petitioner)?

Of course not. That's the whole point of having joint sponsors - when the petitioner doesn't make enough, you bring in someone who does and is willing to take on the I-864 responsibilities.

Basically, I just wanted to be sure it's alright as long as my income will be pretty much nothing. But, if I can be 'unemployed' and the joint sponsor can make that up for me, great.

Sorry, just something I wanted to check on.

Thank you,

J
