My wife is Belgian and we're trying to get through the process.. Would appreciate some clarity on a few questions:

1) For the IV/ds230 documents (birth cert, police record, marriage cert) should I obtain translations into English from French? According to the official instructions all documents need translation. Per a phone call to NVC, I don't need the translation as these documents will be examined in Belgium. Thats a surprise for me as I assumed I'd be sending it to Portsmouth, NH as I did with the I864 package.

2) My wife lived with me in California for a year while she had a J1 visa. It seems that I don't need to get a police from that period as no police records are required from the US. Is that correct? I really hope so because obtaining it without being physically there will be whole bunch of hoops to jump through.

3) How long is it typically after the DS3032 acceptance email until the IV bill may be paid? The IV still cannot be selected for payment on their online site.

Thanks in advance!

Max and Laure

1. Apparently you don't HAVE to get them translated, since they'll be forwarded along to the Belgian consulate, but did it anyway just in case. There are some Egyptian cases, though (for example), that didn't translate anything for this part of the process and everything still turned out okay. It's up to you, basically.

2. This one I'm unsure about, so you'll have to double check with someone else. You should have a police certificate for anywhere she lived for an extended period of time, but I'm assuming since it's the States they could just look it up? Not entirely sure.

3. It should only take a few days - probably two or three.

USC who lived in Manabí, Ecuador with hubby from 2009 - 2013. Hubby became a naturalized American citizen in August 2016. Currently living together in northern Virginia.

When we filed we didn't translate my husbands BC, which was from France, or his police record which was in Dutch. As long as it's in one of the official languages of the country or in English I don't think you will need to worry about it, but it's up to you.
