Hello everyone! I haven't been on this site in a couple years. My husband and I just celebrated our 2 year anniversary on 2/1/13. Now, we received our letter that it is time to file our i-751.

During his initial visa processing, we used a lawyer for several reasons. We were both totally new to the US immigration process, and although he is a UK citizen, he was born in Afghanistan and we feared this may raise some flags. Also, as a mixed race couple (Afghan/White), we feared greater scrutiny. When we did our interview, our lawyer came along and things went pretty smoothly.

Now, we're gearing up for round two and debating whether or not we should use his services again. He charges about $700 (on top of the normal filing fees, which we'd pay anyway). While it wouldn't be too bad financially, we have a baby on the way and we'd like to save as much as possible. However,I feel like if I do something wrong on the paperwork and my husband gets deported, it's definitely not worth the savings. I can't imagine what it would be like if he wasn't around when our baby arrives.

Did any of you use a lawyer? Or, were you able to do it yourselves without any trouble? I know if I file myself I'd include our previous lease, current lease, car insurance information, joint bank statements, doctor's note declaring my pregnancy/due date, life insurance statement with husband as my beneficiary, photos, affidavits, etc. Obviously, I have to do get all of these things together for the lawyer too.

And, second topic, we filed an AR 11 when we moved back in November. USCIS still sent this notice to our old address. I looked online and saw that everything has been updated, so I'm not sure why it went there. However, I just TODAY found out that I'm supposed to have filed an i-865 at the same time. I had never heard of this form before. Should I file it now? Should I call someone and explain the situation? I feel like if I messed up something that simple, I can only imagine what I might mess up on i-751.

Just file I-865 now. Don't call anyone and don't explain anything.

As far as the lawyer goes..... if you can follow the guides on VJ and information in other posts I don't see why you would need a lawyer. ROC is a very straightforward process.

Yes, don't waste your money on a lawyer. Read the guidelines first and if you have any specific question, you can get good help in the forum.
