Am going over to the US tomorrow to see my wife for a week, have got a copy of my apartments lease which runs to Dec 2013, a copy of our I-130 application and a letter from work saying i'm on paid vacation till the date i return.

I was tempted to take a suitcase full of clothes to leave out there but chickened out.

I don't think it matters. you will not be carrying your suitcase with you while being interviewed at the POE. I went three times last year to spend my annual leave with my husband but there was never a problem with me having a big suitcase. I left some of my stuff there each time. This will only be a problem when you get pulled to secondary and they decide to search you but I never had that problem. Just in case I get pulled out, I have all the documents with me such as bank statement,Employment certificate, NOA1. But I didn't needed them all those times.

The POE officer was very nice. Just be confident and be honest but answer only what they ask. :-)My last trip the POE officer asked who lived in the address in my I94, I said my husband. He smiled and said, lucky guy! :-). so good luck and enjoy!

Take things appropriate to your trip as a tourist. They can search your luggage after you've gone through the immigration desk and turn you back if your luggage looks like all your worldly goods or job hunting items.

Toting extra clothes or shoes shouldn't be suspicious. Taking 20 pairs of shorts for one week in a snowy city might get a few questions. Or your entire music collection might look like you're either staying or selling. Once you have a visa, then things like 100 CDs aren't looked at with the eye to import duties. It's all free with the visa in hand.

Went through immigration at IAD and was asked, how long are you here for(6 nights), where am i staying(with in laws) so your wife lives over here? (yes) what do her parents do (i told them) ok have a nice time.

I didn't bring the huge bag of clothes chickened out, thought id see how things go as i'll be back over in March and April.

I'm so nervous that my husband will get turned away when he comes in March for our "wedding". He's only staying for three weeks, but I'm nervous anyway! He would spag out if they told him he couldn't come in.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.
