Hi,

I had an SSN when I was in the US on F-1 visa (had co-ops in our school). When I go to the US on K-1 visa can I skip the SSN part of the process or do I need to do something regarding it?

No, you need not apply for the second time..An SSN is valid for a person’s entire lifetime, so it is a one-time application. Your assigned number will never change over your life time.

This has just reminded me that I also have a SSN from when I was in the US on an J visa 11 years ago. I did not keep the little card I was given as never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would ever be returning to the US on a Fiance visa.

Can anyone advise me how I would be able to retrieve my SSN or would it just be something to mention when I go the the office to apply for one after I arrive in the US?

Do you have the number still. I think you can get a replacement card.

I'm pretty sure I have lost everything from back then in various house moves but I'm going to have a look tonight for it to see if I still have it.

If I cannot find it is there anyway that they will be able to retrieve it for me or anywhere that I can contact to find it out

You can get a new one. My wifes niece who lived here in 93/94 while in hs got a number for a bank acct. Was less restrictive at time. In the next 20 years while growing up the card disappeared. Last year she and my wife cowrote a book that they self published. The self publisher needed a ss number to avoid backup withholding. She said well I used to have a number. I corrected her she has the number.I told her to make appt with US Citizen services at US consulate in Rio. She did so. Apparently the consulate doesnt handle ss stuff. they contacted the us consulate in Buenos Aires. they emailed her her number in 24 hours. Just contact US Citizen Services. part of their job.
