Vaccines - not sure about Varicella

Currently, we're going through my AOS, and I needed to have the medical again (had it for my K1) as my last one expired. The doctor charged $225 for the exam and a TB test - basically he took a blood test, did the TB test and looked at my vaccination record. Five minutes total. So anyway, he writes me a script saying I need the varicella vaccine - I said I'd not had it done as a child (can't remember if I had chicken pox as a child either). He told me to get it done at the health department as they don't do it.

So, I call the health department. They don't do it either. I call all the walk in clinics in my area, they don't do it. So I call the doctor's office back and tell them this, asking if they have any ideas. They say that actually, they can get it for me but it will cost me $300! I couldn't believe it. Does it really cost this much? Does it matter that there's a possibility I may be pregnant? I told her to ask the Doctor if I really needed the vaccine, but she said if he said I needed it then that was it - case closed.

Can anybody tell me where they were able to get the vaccine and how much it generally costs?

Do you have insuarance??? I did not need to get the Varicella shot coz I did remember getting chicken pox and my doctor just took my word for it. If u r pregnant u can get an exception. How can the health dept. not have the vaccine and they give it to kids all the time when they r newborns?? Does'nt sound right. Maybe u can try to get a blood test instead to check if u r immune to chicken pox then u will not have to get the shot but if u r not immune then u will be back square one. Oh Gosh!!!! hope someone has a better suggestion for you. Good luck

I don't have insurance. I only have coverage under my husband's if I am pregnant. We want to get insurance, but at the moment, all our money is going into the AOS black hole. Problem is, I don't remember if I had chicken pox as a child. I also don't believe in vaccinations. I will get them for the sake of staying in the country - but for something like chicken pox, which for someone who is healthy like me is not a lethal disease, its insane to insist that I get one. Its not like I will spread it to the population either because most people have either had it or are vaccinated... doh!

You can have a varicella-zoster titre done. It is a blood test to check to see if you have the antibodies. The downside is that if you don't, you know have actual proof and they can require you have the vaccine. And you then have the cost of the titre and the cost of the vaccine.

Do you have siblings? Do any of them recall having chickenpox? If they did then more likely than not you have been exposed. It would appear that if the local Health Dept doesn't offer the vaccines then they are not to worried about it being a public health threat!

I had my medical checkup in the clinic accredited by the US Embassy in Manila. They gave me a varicella and MMR shot. They gave me a varicella dose 1, since I don't have any pock marks when I had chicken pox.

When we applied for my AOS, my medical checkup papers was still valid. When I had my interview, my medical papers were still valid. They didn't request me to submit to a check-up again.

As for immunization, I called the County Health Center for information on my immunization follow-up and how much it will cost. I had my follow-up shots of varicella and tetanus. In my county's health center, the cost is $15/shot.

Your county health center have that immunization program. This is one of the important services a county health center should have. Check it our again..

Good luck!
