Passport and Interview

Ok I think I asked this awhile back, but read some more information about having your passport at your interview. I've sent in my N-400 (3 years date will be Jan 10th). My passport will be expiring in July and I want to get a replacement.

I am reading that during the interview, that they are looking at passports to check all the trips you have taken when you left the county. If my passport is sent out and I don't have it at the time of the interview, what will that do? I'm not sure since my actual 3 years (married) is done Jan 10th, if I can expect the interview to be after that date or not. If so I can send it in in the next month.

Anyways I don't want to be caught without it if it is something they actually look through at the interview. So just curious if it is definatly needed. If so, has anyone gotten an interview before their actual 3 years anniversery date of being a LPR?

I can reassure you that the interview won't be before 2007/1/10--though you may do biometrics (and maybe civics test) prior to that (partly due to the requirement, and partly "you don't hurry a bureaucracy")

When you apply for the passport they ask you if you would like the old one returned...so you can still have it as a record of your past travels.

I thought that they returned Canadian passports (with "Void" stamped through) as default--that's been my experience the last few times.

Yep the do return them, that's not the problem, it's the worry that I'll be called for the interview during the time my passport is sent back to Canada to get re-processed and during that time I won't have it with me.

I just would hate to have to tell them during the interview I don't have my passport at all...

Of course, there's a "simple" solution--though it has the penalty of losing the remaining time on an unexpired passport.

That (non)solution is to get the new passport NOW.

By "now", I meant just that--not waiting till even 2006/12/31. In that case, your new (and voided-old) passports would be back well prior to your getting an interview notice.

I'm 99% certain that the DAH did not take his UK passport to the naturalization interview.

When I was interviewed ... the officer never asked to see my passport but did ask me the dates of travelling outside the US.

Well my photos have been sent back to Canada so my dad can get them notorized by someone that has known me most my life. That will take some time for my photos to come back, when that happens I can submit my passport. As of now, the "now" isn't going to be possible until the photos are back into my hands with the notorization on the back. So I am looking at Dec or so before I can even file for my new passport.

Anyways good to hear that other have not needed to bring it. I am pretty sure it is just to see how long you've been outside the US. Most of mine have been flying domestically and then renting a car to drive across the border, and those they don't stamp your passport at all anyways. So there's really not much to see other then my face in a book.

I'll probably get a letter explaining what I need to bring in and such anyways and hopefully that will be before I get my photos back and then I can decide if I should renew my passport before or after the interview. Thanks...

Hi Warlord!

I dont know how to answer on your question., but i would like to ask you if you would please keep us posted about your N-400 timeline as i Reside in Colorado myself and my local office is in Denver too.

So i am gonna apply for the Citizenship on the end of January and wundering how long does the whole process take.

Well I've gotten my biometrics already done. Got that in the mail last week and went to the Aurora center to get my fingerprints on Wed. So that didn't take too long at all to do. They then gave me a cool little package that has the Civics quiz in it along with a CD to listen too about the civics questions etc. Wasn't expecting that at all...
