I'm living in Vietnam with my wife (she's Vietnamese). We're sending our I-864 soon, and I have a question regarding our residence in the U.S. after we arrive: We'll be living in California with my friend, and a different friend (who's in the middle of the I-130 process) recommended that I have my friend in California complete a short, notarized affidavit that states that my wife and I will indeed be living at his residence upon arrival in the U.S.

Is this affidavit necessary, or at least helpful? I can't find any information about it on here, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

I don't think it is necessary. I can't recall a single document that requires that you produce such an affidavit.

Keep things simple and only send in what the NVC asks for. If they need something additional, they will let you know. I used to work in a state government, and always got frustrated at applications that had too many superfluous documents (that we did not ask for), or that were lacking documents that were required. Best way to put the examiner in a foul mood...

You will need PROOF of US Domicile for I864 if you are not living in the US.. an affidavit from the friend will be sufficient. If you can use the friends mailing address as yours in the US that will also help... filing from abroad can be tricky now that there is no DCF.
