Opted for CR-1,how to file for EAD

My wife arrived last sunday on K-3,but we have opted for NVC process for CR-1 consular interview. We tried the SSA office and they said we need to get the EAD first,so we are sending in the 1-765 soon. My worry is that since EAD customarilly goes along with AOS 1-485 filing wouldn't the EAD be denied on those grounds? My health insurance says they cant enroll my wife on my plan without the SSN. Any idea on how to go about it?

From the instructions to form I-765, under part 2, eligibility categories:

"K-3 Nonimmigrant Spouse of U.S. Citizen or K-4

Dependent--(a)(9).

File your EAD application along with

evidence of your admission such as copies of your Form I-94,

passport, and K visa."

Looks like K-3s are quite entitled to an EAD without having to file for AOS.

"When all else fails, read the instructions."
