This most likely has already been discussed but I can't find it very easily.

Doing even more research on the K1, I see that having your fiance on a K1 will mean they most likely will not work for 2-3 months. With my fiance, I know this will not suffice for him. It would mean if we file, say, tomorrow, we wouldnt expect to be approved til Feb/March and then no working until June. Arg.

So in the opinion of those with more knowledge,

would it be more fluid to attempt the CR1 visa? Flying somewhere to get married and then filing the CR1?

Advantages/disadvantages?

Can he come here to elope or must it take place in a different country?

The CR-1 does not really take that much longer than a K-1, and after it is approved the foreign spouse will be an LPR upon entry to the US. This means they will be sent a green card, can get their SSN and be able to work and travel outside the US and re-enter. There is no need to adjust status to get the work authorization and green card approval like you need to do on the K-1, so that saves you $1070. The CR-1 route comes out cheaper because of that.

You can get married anywhere, including the US and file for the CR-1. He will return to his country after his visitation time in the US is up and then have his interview when the time comes.
