Hi everybody...

I have a quick question regarding changing my last name after getting married: Is there any chance that I can register my marriage in Germany and apply for a new passport with my new last name at the German embassy?

I am still a few months away from everything, but a real control freak so I like to figure out what my options are and what I can and cannot do.

Thanks!

Yes, you can change your last name at the German Embassy and apply for a new passport. It'll take a while because the paperwork gets routed back to Berlin.

Thanks so much for your answer. Do you know if they will register my marriage in the same process?

When you do the process of the name change, it's like going to the Standesamt in Germany, they want to see the marrige license and everything that goes with it, like birth certificate of the both of you. Your husband needs to go with you to also sign the forms. after that your marriage should be registerd in germany and your new passport is in the works.

A lady at the Standesamt here in Germany told me this, because that's what we had first planned on doing, but changed our mind and did the name change here in Germany before moving to the states.

You can also get more info from the Standesamt Berlin II. From what I understand that's where Germans abroad are "registered".

Oh ok... that is very good to know. A friend told me that my then husband has to sign something, but she said I could only do it in Germany. This why I don't have to bother with all that when I go back to Berlin to see my family!

Thank you so much!

If you do it in the states, you will have to show the 'abmeldebescheinigung'. Without that, you won't be able to change your name and get your passport renewed at the embassy.

No

Did you not get one when moving to the states as an au pair?

No, because i didnt know id end up staying here. Things just came up and changed. I saw i can do it per mail. I mean you always have to have ties to your home country, so i figured its not a good idea to take that step. Is it a problem?

Yes. I did that in a couple of days all together. First, the name change, then to get a new passport (takes only 3 days) & the same day I got my passport the 'abmeldebescheinigung'

But you can also just get the last thing and get everything else done in the states at the embassy.

Ties to your home country will always be your passport. Try to get your Abmeldebestaetigung via email. Everything is possible even if they tell you no at first. You can even ask your nearest german embassy/consulat in your area for help in advance. don't worry, everything will fall into place :-)

You can't get that per email! You have to sign the document infront of them.

And I talked to the consulate too. They couldn't help me much because I didn't have my greencard in my hand yet.

I gotta double check, but I think there is a way to request the paperwork online and then send it back to them signed. I am going to look into it.
