And now that I have more time...

I have no idea why you have this impression about Russian education, but it's incorrect, because courses like math, Russian, a foreign language, history, social science, political science, legal studies, philosophy, economics, natural science etc. are mandatory for everybody in most Russian universities.

I think the confusion comes with the fact that many American universities have bloated core curriculums that many people do not really start even concentrating on courses related to their major until their third year.

Hi!

It is any higher education that used to be for five years in Russia. Specialists can be in teaching , in mathematics, physics, English etc.. same with engineers and other technical higher specializations.

In Russia in order to get your bachelor, you need to study no less than four years, it is considered to be a higher professional education. Speicalist had to study no less than 5 years. However, after 31 December 2010 Russia accepted bachelor and master systems ( Bologna process)
