I am in Peterborough Ontario and went to the OPP Detachment and it took 15mins. They did it while I waited, and it only cost $25.00... I was pleasantly surprised.. :)

(and yes it does say: "National Criminal Records repository maintained by the RCMP".)

I had to get my clearance for Calgary. They told me 5-6 weeks. It took around 5 weeks. I was nervous too because everything I had was already scheduled and ready to go except for the clearance, but it got there in the nick of time.

I Went to my local Commissionares office and I had it within 4 hours. They tell you it may take up to two business days but usually not, especially if you go in the morning. My RCMP branch told me that they actually didn't provide police checks and told me to go to them, as an O.P.P or any other provincial police office can't provide you with a Canada wide police check. If he has no prior criminal history, he needs the CPIC. If someone does have a criminal history that one won't work as it is just a certificate to show that you have a clear record.

Otherwise, if you have a record, you would need a certified criminal record check which requires fingerprinting. That is the check that takes weeks to months to get back.

Victoria, what province are you in? I was told I had to go to my local police.. and because my rural area is policed by the O.P.P. Detachment, I went there and they did provide me with a Canada wide police check... it clearly states on my record check: "National Criminal Records repository maintained by the R.C.M.P."

Is my Criminal Record Check Certificate not enough with that on it? I have no prior criminal record.

I'm in Ontario too. I had called the RCMP detachment in Newmarket and they told me I couldn't go to the Ontario police because they couldn't give me a Canada-wide check. Maybe it was just my area but they told me I had to go to Barrie or Mississauga Commissionaires if I wanted it Canada-wide and from the RCMP. It also could be miscommunication between departments.

I'm sure yours is fine as long as it's for all of Canada, and says it's maintained by the RCMP. Besides, you have nothing to worry about anyway since your record is clear. If you have no record than the name check is fine. It just seems a lot of people are being mislead into getting the digital fingerprint records which can take months and are completely arbitrary if you have no record.

Thanks, I was pretty sure I was okay. They even asked me at the police station what the police check was for and I said Immigration... and it wasn't a problem. It just seems like there is a lot of mis-information out there.. and it appears it is different from province to province too..
