OK. Things are going pretty well for us on our K1 visa after I-129F petition approval. She got the packet3 documents from Guangzhou VERY quickly and now they have even received the filled out documents so I'm expecting the interview, in, what, 40 days if it's very smooth? So far I've had good luck, ie, read this site and prepared as much as I could.

Darnell has answered some questions about the certificates we need, specifically the multiple named 'unmarried certificate' or 'unmarried statement' or 'certificate of marriageability.'

I've called the NVC, Visa Services in DC, and e-mailed the consulate and still don't have a clear picture in my mind.

Is this

1) simply a notarized sworn statement to the effect of "i've never married and am single"

or

2) a certificate made from looking in government records, such as the hukou or family registration book (page in her case)

?

Finally the Notary Office in Beijing has said they could generate either for the USA, but to get the 2nd she needs to go to Qingdao where her hukou was also managed. In Qingdao then even told her at first they couldn't give her the letter, but now she talked to someone higher up or something and they will do it.

So, a sworn and notarized statement of her being unmarried would be great. Is that what we need?

Darnell, thanks for answering. Did you see the link:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/257855-packet-3-unmarried-certificate/

Here you talked with someone, Jackc, who said it is a sworn statement. You said you knew there was something new. That was in 2010.

Also, the Packet 4 instructions from Guangzhou's website says:

"Unmarried certificate. You must submit a notarized statement saying that you are currently single..."

Doesn't that sound like a sworn and notarized statement from the applicant?

Thanks for your reply MuDelphi. Did they make her return another day with a sworn statement or did they let her do it there on her original interview date? Just curious.

FWIW, consulate didn't take our non-married white book. They asked my wife to sign a sworn statement. This was September 2011.

This topic is very interesting. My fiancee has several "official" copies of a notorized, stamped, statement from Zhu Hai Chinese officials that says she is single and eligible to marry, both in Chinese and in English. We are also awaiting our interview date. Should my fiancee also take in a "self-made" notorized sworn statement also? Thanks

NOA2 12/15/2011, Interview 3/19/12, = about 95 days. (Note: I-797 NOA1 from NVC to Guangzhou took over 3 weeks). This was with professional form preparation by lawyer in Guangzhou. Best wishes. Your patience will likely be tested. The only thing that keeps me going is love and compassion for my fiancee who endures the brunt of it.

IMO, this is one of the 'white books'.

My apologies for not replying sooner, I've been swamped with work stuff.

Let's break it down a bit, aye?

What's a white book?

A White book is a notarial translation of an official China document.

The Official China Document here stems from her marital status that a Chinese Gov Official gleans from her hukuo book (where such things are listed)... That Chinese Government Official will write up an official government document attesting to her marital status, after reviewing the hukuo book..

and then...

The Notarial Translation piece is a TRANSLATION of the official government document. The notarization part comes in to mention that it's a TRANSLATION, and the COPY included of the document in Chinese is an accurate reproduction of said document.

I hope I made that bit clear. Most folk just get into the PSB with a hukuo book, then to a translation office .. In many cities, the 'path' for document generation is known. In smaller cities, also in rural areas, is much confusion on 'what to do', but usually, in that smaller city, a gov official can make the first step, to produce the document attesting to the person's marital status. If confusion about translation locally, think a bit - there's BOUND to be a huge city IN that province, that handles such matters, to produce a WHITE BOOK.

Good Luck !

ps - I mentioned before - SHE has a HUKUO problem. It's now raising it's head, in the search for 'this document'.

I say NO, as yer lass has a WHITE BOOK concerning her marital status, and GUZ IV understands WHITE BOOKS for marital status.

This is all great information but my Fiancé has an concern that she will have to go to her employer for verification since she has had this job for well over 15 years, (this was indicated by someone at the Bureau of Public Affairs in Wuhan). She is concerned that if she does she could loose her retirement if she quites after she gets her visa and is ready to leave.

Anyone have any input about this would be greatly appreciated so I can pass it on to her so she possibly isn't so worried.

well, the RIGHT answer comes from HR officer at the company.

The PSB folk try to be helpful, and usually offer up advice, sometimes is stern, sometimes is wrong.

The HR officer knows all and remember - is possible to 'buy out' the retirement benefits as well, paying a small yearly fee to maintain the retirement account, until the retirement benefits start to be paid out. IMO, it's worth asking the HR officer about this, no need to mention leaving company for go to usa, but instead ask - leave company to care for relative in other city - what happens to my retirement benefits?
