SS card and green card names don't match

Hey all, I have an odd question and I'm going to use a dummy name to illustrate it because I don't want my full name on the internet. I was born Mary Jane Smith, but have always gone by Jane Smith. I married Bob Jones and filed my immigration papers as Jane Smith Jones. My EAD and thus SS card and CA ID say Jane Smith Jones. At our interview on Tuesday, the lady said that marriage only changes your last name and so my name is legally Mary Jane Jones and that's what my green card will say. She said to just wait the 2 conditional years before doing a legal name change to Jane Smith Jones because I'll need to get a new green card then anyway. But if I get my passport, it will have to say Mary Jane Jones, and I'm concerned that having different names on my SS card and green card/passport is going to cause problems. Should I just go through with the name change now and re-order a green card?

If you want. Its up to you. Your going to wait 4-6 months to get your need green card and you have to send your other one away. Keep that in mind.

Oh geez, I didn't know that. Well, is it going to be a problem if the names don't match for a while?

LOL

That's what's happening to my wife.

We did ask the officer why not use her married name.

In short, the officer told us that she must change all her SS, ID and Marriage Certificate to the same name as on the Green Card.

So we must start all over again.

I called the county here to change her name on our marriage certificate because she needs it to reentry the country (her name on her passport and married certificate is different).

They said it's not necessary and they can't do it and we must go to court to change it :o

She'll travel out of the country in 2 weeks. Her names on her passport, marriage certificate and green card are different, somewhat similar with part of her name and my last name.. LOL

Really hope she wouldn't get any problem coming back here.

Any suggestions?

Oh my goodness! Luckily our marriage certificate doesn't have my married name (the lady said to just apply for an SS card and license, etc. with my new name), so I guess that's a little less complicated. Please let me know how your experience goes! I would muuuch rather not have to go to court (it's a lengthy process that costs ~$700 in CA, ugh), at least not for awhile. I'm so over dealing with government agencies

You're so right! We really didn't know that the officer would put a different name on her GC.

With the time and more money to spend, I think we'd better wait until the cost could be free.. LOL

I'll surely let you know how it goes.

Thank you!

I had no idea either - honestly, the idea never even crossed my mind. When she asked if I'd been to court to change my name, we both gave her puzzled looks LOL oh well, thanks to you too, and good luck!

I have a "name" question too!!

Hopefully somebody can help

I didn't change my name after got married coz I think that will make my AOS easier since there are no different names.

I am planning to change it after I get my GC

Can anybody tell me where to start once I get my GC? Who should I go talk to first?

I am so confused with all these SS card, GC, Drivers license, marriage certificate etc..

Thanks

Thats a waste of money and your time, like I said above. You must file for an I-90 and change the name on your green card by using your marriage certificate. It will take 4-6 months you have to send your green card to them and you have to pay MORE for it. another 400 ish $

You should have just put your married name on the AOS.
