Department of State reduces K1 + CR1 visa Fees

Department of State has just reduced visa application fees for K1 and CR1 visas.

Currently when applying for a K1 or CR1 Visa there are two rounds of fee payments. First when applying to USCIS a petitioner pays $340 when filing the I-129F (Fiancee Visa Petition) or a $420 when filing the I-130 (Spousal Visa Petition).

Once USCIS has completed their portion of the review of your case, the State Department steps in and they charge a second round of fees. For a K1 the fee payable just before the consular interview was $350. It has now been reduced to $240.

For a CR1 visa the fee charged by the NVC (State Department's National Visa Center) the fee has been reduced from $404 to only $230.

For the State Departments New Fees see

The small print of this change is 'Department of State can do this because they now can bill other government departments for their share of costs'. This probably means that USCIS will be getting the bill. It won't be surprizing if this eventually causes USCIS to increase their upfront fees to compensate.

lol yeah i want a refund too!

All I know, is that I need you... I need you in my life as much as I need food or water or air to breathe - for the longest time, I've had this thirst deep inside... only to be known and understood and be loved for who I am. I have longed for someone, someone like you - to share my life with... all the ups and downs and everything in between. then out of no where - you walked into my life, quenching my thirst, satisfying my longing. and I know from every thing with in - that you are the one... you're the one I've been waiting for all this time. I want and I need you - more than I can usually find words to say... But today and always - please believe and know that you're the one for me and I'll hold you close and I'll never want to let you go...

seriously, is there a refund? i paid $350 each for me and my daughter but we haven't interviewed yet because we are waiting for our medical clearance.

The fee change took effective April 13, 2012. If you paid your Visa Application fee of $350 on or after this date. Then you over paid the application fee. The new visa fee is $240.

As per US Department of State..

Important Notice - New Application Fees: Nonimmigrant and immigrant visa application fees will change on April 13, 2012. The fees for most nonimmigrant visa applications and Border Crossing Cards will increase, while all immigrant visa application fees will decrease. All visa applicants must pay the fee amounts in effect on the day they pay, including immigrant visa applicants who pay fees to the National Visa Center (NVC).

Fees that will decrease are not refundable - If you paid a visa fee before April 13, 2012 and that fee decreased, we cannot give you a refund.

Fees that will increase (only nonimmigrant fees) - If you paid your visa fee before April 13, 2012, you do not have to pay the difference between the new and old fee amounts as long as your visa interview is on or before July 12, 2012. Starting July 13, 2012, you will be required to pay the difference between the old and new fee amounts – no exceptions.
