what is security clearance after interview?

One of my friend told me that he was interviewed year before but embassy kept telling him since that time that they are waiting for security clearance about his visa and they did not yet issed him any visa.What is security clearance.Has anybody heard about it?they told him that he can not call them to know about his security clearance the department who issue security clearance. please tell me .I am worreying about my case too.

Sounds like what is called AP or Administrative Processing.

Nearly all males from MENA countries will be placed in AP after their interviews.

Security clearance is basically a big background check done thru Washington to gain clearance for that beneficiary to gain a visa. They check so many things such as, the marriage certificates, backgrounds for the area where they have lived, whether or not they are on a terror watch list, if their relationship is genuine, they may do field investigations where they go to the area of the beneficiary and ask questions about them from neighbors, family friends and shopkeepers.... so when its cleared the visa can be issued
