Hi :) Just to clarify: Your friend is the USC, and she is concerned that her Egyptian fiance will not be granted a visa because he has not fulfilled his mandatory military service in Egypt yet?

If this is correct, I can only speak of the experiences of friends who had student visas to the US from Turkey (both were PhD students). This could be entirely different than a fiance visa because the path to permanent residency would be very different - so the US gov't might have different concerns.

In those cases, the US government didn't care about the Turkish government's requirement that its male citizens serve in the military. They received student visas without issue, and, were interviewed for work in the US after finishing school and had no issues receiving work visas.

However, in order for my Turkish friends to be able to return to Turkey ever, they had to put the matter to rest. Both returned to Turkey while in school and served their mandatory military time. Had they not dealt with the issue in Turkey as Turkish citizens, they could have been arrested if/when they returned to Turkey for any reason.

Thus, it might be important for your friend to think about whether she or her fiance want to be able to visit his family/Egypt in the future.

Hopefully, someone with your exact question experience will weigh in though :)

if he is not an only male child OR the oldest child and his father is over 60 years old (which will automatically exempt him from military service) then nope he can't go anywhere, in Egypt u cant go to the shitter without ur military paper...good luck

Thank you both for your responses. Yes she is a US Citizen, and he would be migrating to the US.

he needs to show the military his university papers; how old is he??? if he is under 28 then it shouldn't be much of a problem;

As previously stated, the problem won't be on the US end of this deal... He may not be allowed to leave (and return to) Egypt without fulfilling his mandatory military service. I have heard that they will not make you serve if you are married to a foreigner, but I have also heard that they don't care these days. The US, however, couldn't care less.

Passing harsh judgment on those you don't know says nothing of the judged and everything of the judge.
