Hi there - my husband just had his interview and it was placed "on hold" after they requested a letter for attestation from his ex-employer in a foreign country verifying that he was never arrested or in trouble with the police while residing there. This is because said country has told him it is unlikely he would ever be able to get a certificate of good conduct since there is no proof he resided there.

We submitted everything within 2 days (thanx to email) and we should be set. The woman conducting the interview told him once received, the case would reopen and take about 10 days. I am terrified that it will really take months - has anyone else have this experience?

Thank you,

V

If she said 10 days, I don't think you should worry. You can call the Department of State to follow the case status.

Hi there - thank you for your response. It's France - I am just worried that things will get stuck somewhere - you read some awful stories of people waiting and waiting some more....I hope you are right. She said 10 days to process, so I'm guessing a week or more on top of that. So frustrating of course because they had all this time to tell us to show up with this piece of paper and everything would have been resolved. But from the looks of it, the actual GC is a go.

I had my interview in Toronto Canada and they requested a few missing documents. It's been 2 months since I submitted the documents. I still haven't received my visa back yet they just keep telling me it is under review. Hopefully your consulate is faster as Montreal is known to be slow.

Good luck!

No, I meant, the country he worked in? NVC didn't ask for a police certificate?

10 days is the amount of time they give you at Paris embassy to receive your visa once it's issued. Did she tell him he was approved or not? It sounds to me like he's approved, they just need to receive the document to issue the visa.

Again, call Department of State to know if they have received the document they asked for, and if the visa is pending or if it has been issued. DOS - 202-663-1225 (press 1 then 0 to speak with a visa specialist)

It's Kenya - he got a new passport recently which means any proof that he actually resided there is with the old one - retained by France. He went twice to the Kenyan embassy in Paris, paid the fee and completed the paperwork, but the woman there told him it was pretty much a waste of time. I agree with you - I think they just need something for his file frankly - I'm just paranoid. Talking to you helps so thank you!!

Oh, you're welcome. I'm paranoid too and I had my share of running after a ghostly police certificate myself, so I understand the frustration.

He didn't have some kind of legal resident status in Kenya?

I'm curious about what they said at NVC stage about the Kenyan certificate. They didn't request it?

Anyway, since he was able to obtain the letter the consulate requested, it's now just a matter of time.

Well in sending all the docs prior to the interview, we included a letter from him explaining that he went to the Kenyan embassy and recounting everything to them. In our checklist, this was marked as "U" for unable to obtain. So of course you think "ok - they're cool with it and understand how difficult it is to get documents from Africa". The woman interviewing him said it herself too. So I think they just need to cover themselves and add this piece of paper in his file in lieu of the certificate. I hope it's sufficient, because if they insist on waiting for Kenya, this really could take months...

Yeah I'm sure it's enough, since that's all they requested. It's good they understand how hard obtaining paperwork can be in countries where the administration is not so organized.

I just got a police certificate from Turkey this week (I lived and worked there during 5 years). The first time I contacted the Turkish consulate to request it was last November.... It's been crazy every step of the way.

Funny enough, my checklist on the interview letter has an F for "not necessary for this application" on it  I think it's a mistake.

sounds like it worked out for you! I also think the frustrating part is that you are fairly confident you will get your green card so you go in there thinking "it's either yes or no" and instead there's this limbo state of having it, but not quite fully...you know?

Yeah, there's always a risk something might not be as they like... The whole process is so stress inducing!

One quick question, because I'm a little behind in the process: after you got your interview scheduled by NVC, did you receive any instructions from the embassy?

Good luck and don't worry!

No - the appointment letter and checklist were the last I heard from them. Also frustrating because we could have showed up with this darn letter if they had just asked in the last month....something to fix within their system!

They could have called or emailed, yes, it would have saved everyone time and worry. But who knows, maybe they don't actually look into the file before the day of the interview.
